JOHN BOSCO THE EDUCATOR

St. John Bosco, also known as Don Bosco, was a 19th century Italian priest and he dedicated his life to the welfare and education of disadvantaged youth. He founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, a religious institute that continues to operate worldwide, focusing on education and pastoral care.

Early Life and Call to Ministry:

Birth and Childhood: Bom on August 16, 1815, in Becchi, Italy, John Bosco was the youngest son of peasant farmers. His father died when he was young, leaving his mother, Margaret, to raise him with great care.

Education: Despite financial struggles, Bosco managed to get an education and was particularly influenced by the priests who taught him.

Ministry and Educational Philosophy

Priesthood: Ordained in 1841, Don Bosco dedicated himself to the welfare of young people in Turin, a rapidly industrializing city where many youth were left without guidance or education.

Preventive System: Central to his educational philosophy was the “preventive system.” emphasizing reason, religion, and kindness in teaching. He believed in fostering a loving environment to prevent the need for punishment.

Founding the Salesians: In 1859, he founded the Salesian Society, later known as the Salesians of Don Bosco, and the Institute of the daughters of Mary Help of Christians to provide education and support to poor and marginalized youth.

Contributions and Legacy

Educational Work: Don Bosco opened schools, orphanages, and workshops where young people could learn trades and receive a formal education. He also emphasized the importance of vocational training.

Missionary Work: The Salesians quickly expanded their work beyond Italy. establishing schools, missions, and orphanages worldwide.

Canonization and Influence: Don Bosco was canonized as a saint in 1934 by Pope Pius XI. His methods and educational philosophy continue to influence educators and caregivers globally, focusing on a holistic approach to youth development.
